4th Sunday after Epiphany, Year B

Scriptures:

Deuteronomy 18:15-20 The prophet speaks with God’s authority.

Psalm 111 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. (Ps. 111:10)

1 Corinthians 8:1-13 Limits to liberty: the case of food offered to idols.

Mark 1:21-28 The healing of one with an unclean spirit.

Key verse:

“They were all amazed, and they kept on asking one another, “What is this? A new teaching—with authority!” Mark:1-27

Questions to ponder:

1. What is it like to reach/realize one's full or highest potential? In your experience, what could prevent a person from reaching one’s full potential?

2. We all have our own unique talents and abilities to make a positive impact in any communities that we belong to. How does our faith in Jesus by God’s grace help us reach our full potential for the kingdom of God?

3. St. Paul pointed out that knowledge puffs up, but love builds up in 1 Corinthians 8:1. There are many kinds of knowledge, God’s, ours, the world’s. There are also many kinds of love, God’s, ours, and the world’s. Instead of being the stumbling block, how could we be the steppingstone of God’s love to build up the body of Christ, the church?

Prayer: God of love and wisdom, thank you to Jesus’ teachings which humbles us, and his compassionate healing restores us. Through his life among us, we heard your vision for your kingdom, we saw transformation in the lives of all who trust and depend on you. May our being and doing reach the full potential that you have expected of us so that your light which brings hope and joy may shine through the body of Christ, your church. Amen.
