Baptism of our Lord, Year B

Scriptures:

Genesis 1:1-5 God creates light

Psalm 29 The voice of the Lord is upon the waters. (Ps. 29:3)

Acts 19:1-7 Baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus

Mark 1:4-11 Revelation of Christ as God’s servant

Key verse:

“On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.” Acts 19:5

Questions to ponder:

1. What had you seen that was ordinary becoming extraordinary by being infused, added, modified, reshaped, etc.?

2. What has God given to us, ordinary people, to make us extraordinary - God’s children?

3. What are some of the extraordinary characteristics of ours as God’s children? Why does being extraordinary matter to God’s salvation and God’s kingdom?

Prayer: God of ordinary and extraordinary, we give you thanks for choosing us to be your own, to be the bearers of the good news of Jesus, and messengers of your redeeming work. Everything that comes from you brings life. You baptize us with your word through water so that we will live fully. You feed us with your word through wine and bread so that we will live blessed. May we live with the assurance that you have given us all that we need to live as ordinary children of an extraordinary loving God. In the name of Jesus, your beloved son, we pray. Amen.
