The 23rd Sunday after Pentecost, Year A

All Saints Sunday

Scriptures:

Revelation 7:9-17 The multitudes of heaven worship the Lamb

Psalm 34:1-10, 22 For those fearing the Lord lack nothing

1 John 3:1-3 We are God’s children

Matthew 5:1-12 Blessed are the poor in spirit

Key verse: Good News

“O Lord, you redeem the life of your servants, and those who put their trust in you will not be punished.” (Psalm 34:22)

Questions to ponder:

1. How do you co-relate these two phrases stated in the Apostles’ Creed: the communion of saints and the forgiveness of sins?

2. What metaphor might you use to illustrate the co-existence of these two conditions, being saints and sinners? How persuasive is your metaphor, and what might it be lacking?

3. How do you reconcile and embrace these two realities of our identities as Christ believers in our daily life?

Prayer:

Holy God, God of saints and sinners, you sanctify us whenever we humbly confess all of our thoughts, words, and deeds that cause hurt. We thank you for your forgiveness that leads us to repent and live a mending life. May your wisdom, O God, help us notice our own shortcomings and guide your people, saints and sinners, to walk alongside each other, to love well and to forgive well. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
