The 22nd Sunday after Pentecost, Year A

Scriptures:

Jeremiah 31:31-34 The Lord will write His law in their hearts.

Psalm 46 The Lord of hosts is our stronghold.

Romans 3:19-28 Justified by God’s grace as a gift

John 8:31-36 Continuing in Jesus’ teachings will know the truth

Key verse: The Good News

“For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by the law.” (Romans 3:28)

Questions to ponder:

1. We justify people or events based on our own values, perspectives, or capabilities. What are some drawbacks of justifying others?

2. What’s your understanding of one being justified by God’s grace through faith in Christ based on Paul’s interpretation in Romans 3:19-28? Why is it good news for believers?

3. How do you relate God’s justification in Romans 3:19-28 to believers’ freedom in John 8:31-36? In other words, how does God’s justification have to do with our freedom made possible by Jesus?

Prayer:

God of grace and God of faithfulness, we humbly come before you with gratitude knowing that we can never justify our own deeds and words to be righteous before You. Because of your grace, we are forgiven and live a rightful relationship with You through Jesus Christ. Because of your faithfulness, we can trust what You have done through Jesus Christ for all believers is good enough. Thank you for the life of Jesus, his teachings, and his ministry which are the examples that please you and honor you. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
