The 21st Week after Pentecost, Year A

Scriptures:

Isaiah 45:1-7 An earthly ruler as the instrument of God’s will

Psalm 96:1-9 [10-13] Ascribe to the Lord honor and power.

1 Thessalonians 1:1-10 Thanksgiving for the church at Thessalonica

Matthew 22:15-22 A teaching on giving to the emperor and to God

Key verse: Good News

“For we know, all siblings in Christ, you are beloved by God who has chosen you.” (1 Thessalonians 1:4)

Questions to ponder:

1. How would you describe the purpose and the meaning of the phrase “ascribe to the Lord” used in Psalm 96:7-8?

2. What is it like to give a gift to someone who didn’t expect it but graciously receives it with joy and uses it for good?

3. What character and posture are needed for both the gift-giver and the gift-receiver in question #2 to amplify the purpose and the meaning of that gift?

Prayer:

God of all living, to you our life belongs; in you we breathe, live, and move; in your presence we are protected, through you we serve and worship, by you we hold the hands of the weary and wounded who should be comforted and healed. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
