The 19th Sunday after Pentecost, Year A

Scriptures: Isaiah 5:1-7; Psalm 80:7-15; Philippians 3:4b-14; Matthew 21:33-46.

Key verse: Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the scriptures: ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord’s doing, and it is amazing in our eyes’? (Matthew 21:42)

Questions to ponder:

  1. What could the tenants hope for by taking the vineyard as their own in Matthew 21:33-46? What might the landlord hope to accomplish by renting the vineyard out?

  2. Which characters in Matthew 21:33-46 could you understand or resonate with better, or related with more, the Landlord, the tenants, one of three slaves, or the Landlord’s son?

  3. How would you be able to see God’s doing in your life even when you are in a disadvantaged situation?

Prayer: O God, our cornerstone, our vine, and our foundation. Lead us to abide in you so that we can stand firm. Live within you so that we are able to last. Grow from you that we can shine and lead others to see your glory, your love, and your redemption. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
